About Tummy Tuck After Pregnancy

A tummy tuck after pregnancy is a body contouring procedure that can elevate the appearance of your abdomen after you have children. It can address the lasting physical changes most commonly associated with pregnancy, such as loose skin, a weakened core, accumulated fat, and separated muscles (diastasis recti). (1) Traditional lifestyle changes, such as dieting or exercise, are often not enough to resolve these concerns. This leaves many women turning to surgical intervention to address the effects of their pregnancy

Types of Tummy Tuck After Pregnancy

We primarily offer two different tummy tucks, as we understand everyone’s pregnancy is different and will leave them with varying concerns. During your consultation, we will assess your concerns to determine which approach is most appropriate for you.

  • Full Tummy Tuck: A full tummy tuck, or a traditional tummy tuck, addresses loose skin, fat, and weakened muscles above and below the navel. If needed, our surgical team may also integrate VASER liposuction into the procedure to address lingering fat.
  • Extended Tummy Tuck: An extended tummy tuck uses a longer incision that extends towards your hips. Your surgeon can perform this variation if you have greater amounts of excess skin.

Benefits

Undergoing a tummy tuck after pregnancy can provide numerous benefits, including:

  • A Resculpted Silhouette: A tummy tuck can eliminate excess skin, fat, and tissue to create a more contoured and defined physique.
  • Repaired Muscles: Our surgical team can address diastasis recti, which is the separation of the abdominal muscles. (2) This is a common occurrence amongst many women when giving birth.
  • Tailored Treatment Plans: Each treatment plan is designed around the anatomy and concerns of each patient to provide results that meet their goals and suit their natural figures.
  • Enhanced Confidence: The effects achieved from a tummy tuck may elevate your body positivity and sense of overall self-confidence.
  • Lasting Results: When maintained properly, the results of a tummy tuck can last for many years.

Candidates

You may want to consider undergoing a tummy tuck if you have been struggling with sagging skin, stubborn accumulations of fat, or weakened and separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) as a result of your pregnancy. You should be finished breastfeeding and having children, as new pregnancies can compromise results. You should also be in good health and possess realistic expectations regarding your results.

Your candidacy is at the discretion of our team, and they will finalize it during your personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

Your personal consultation is the first step to restoring your pre-pregnancy figure. During this visit, you will meet with one of our surgeons so they can learn more about your motivations and confirm your candidacy. They will review your medical history, listen to your concerns, and discuss your goals and expectations. They will also perform a physical examination to assess your natural anatomy, evaluate your skin condition, and check for any diastasis recti.

Your surgeon will then use these gathered details to finalize your candidacy. They will determine which variation of tummy tuck is most appropriate for you, and depending on your goals, they may suggest integrating additional procedures into your treatment plan. As they do this, they will also answer any questions you have to ensure you leave feeling confident about your tummy tuck.

To schedule this consultation, we invite you to request a consultation online. You may also call our Englewood office at (720) 372-2155.

Preparation

Once you have scheduled your procedure, you will be given a set of detailed instructions to help you prepare for your procedure. These instructions are designed to optimize your procedure, recovery, and results. While they will vary depending on your exact concerns and treatment plan, they typically consist of:

  • Discontinuing the use of blood-thinning medications and supplements
  • Coordinating transportation home
  • Arranging someone to care for you for the first 24 to 48 hours of your recovery
  • Making preparations to step away from your professional responsibilities and personal commitments
  • Filling any prescriptions you will need throughout your recovery
  • Ceasing the consumption of alcohol and nicotine in the weeks leading up to your procedure

Procedure

When you arrive at our accredited surgical center for your procedure, your surgeon will answer any remaining questions you may have.

The surgeon will then make an incision that extends across the hips, just above the pubic area. They will then proceed to perform each of your desired corrections, which may include removing excess skin, removing and repositioning your abdominal fat, tightening lax muscles, and correcting diastasis recti. Your surgeon may also reposition and recenter your navel to a more central location.

Once they have completed each correction, your surgeon will assess their work to ensure everything appears balanced, harmonious, and even. They will then suture the incisions, and you will briefly rest before returning home.

Recovery

Our surgical team performs each procedure on an outpatient basis, which means we will release you from our care the same day you receive your procedure. To help you, we will provide a detailed set of recovery instructions. We ask that you adhere to these in order to ensure a safe return to your routine.

You can expect some initial swelling, bruising, and general discomfort around the treated areas. Prescribed medications, plenty of rest, and following your recovery guidelines will keep these effects manageable. You may return to work and other commitments after resting for approximately one to two weeks, but you will need to continue avoiding anything strenuous until your surgeon has approved your return. Throughout your recovery, your surgeon will have you return for follow-up appointments to observe your healing progression.

Results

You will be able to experience the full results of your post-pregnancy tummy tuck after a full recovery. Your exact results will vary, but you can expect to enjoy a smoother and flatter stomach, a more defined waist, and a stronger core. Any muscle separation will now be corrected, restoring a stronger abdominal wall. These effects can all contribute to a greater sense of self-confidence.

The results of a tummy tuck can last for many years. To preserve your refined figure, you will need to maintain a balanced weight, as fluctuations will gradually affect your figure.
