About a Male Tummy Tuck
A male tummy tuck procedure focuses on creating a firmer, more athletic torso. The procedure is ideal for men who have lost a substantial amount of weight or who are experiencing sagging skin because of the natural processes of aging.
Men naturally have a larger body surface area and distinguishing physical characteristics that create different surgical challenges when compared to women. (1) Oftentimes, the main concern for males is their inability to lose intra-abdominal submuscular fat, (1) the type that is stored in the abdominal cavity beneath the abdominal muscles, and surrounds vital organs. This type of fat often accumulates when one gets older and is very stubborn. This fat can also cause the abdomen and causes the abdomen to take on a bloated look. Men typically have more intra-abdominal submuscular fat than women. While a tummy tuck cannot address this type of fat, it is something our surgeons are very knowledgeable about.
A male tummy tuck accounts for these anatomical differences by focusing on the male abdominal structure and muscle composition to enhance a firm and contoured masculine look.
During this procedure, our surgeons tighten abdominal muscles with sutures that allow the torso to appear athletic and flat, compared to a female tummy tuck, where the goal is to create an hourglass shape to deliver the feminine features.
Benefits
A male tummy tuck delivers aesthetic and functional results. By removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen, this procedure offers life-changing benefits, including:
- Increased self-confidence
- A toned and sculpted abdomen
- Enhanced muscle strength
- Long-lasting results
- Enhanced masculine definition
- Removal of sagging skin and stubborn fat
- Promoting a healthier lifestyle
Candidates
The ideal candidates for this procedure are men who want to remove excess sagging skin and achieve a flatter, more masculine abdomen. At times, losing weight with traditional methods may not entirely get rid of stubborn fat or loose skin; a tummy tuck can be a solution to these concerns.
The patient should ideally be a non-smoker or willing to quit for at least six weeks leading up to the procedure and during their recovery. The patient should also be in relatively good health, at a stable and healthy weight, and also hold realistic expectations for their results.
Personal Consultation
Enhancing your abdominal appearance begins with a consultation. During this meeting, your patient coordinator will evaluate your medical history records, discuss your aesthetic goals, and offer insight into your tailored plan. They will also examine your skin, abdominal fat distribution, and muscle structure.

Preparation
Preparing for your tummy tuck surgery is an important step to ensure that your procedure goes smoothly. We may advise you to:
- Partake in minimal and light core exercises to strengthen your core (3)
- Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet
- Cease smoking and nicotine use at least four to six weeks before your procedure
- Avoid alcohol consumption before your procedure
- Improve hydration in preparation for fluid shifts after your procedure
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements
- Arrange transportation after surgery
- Set up a post-surgery recovery area
- Eat a light breakfast before surgery
Procedure
Tummy tucks are performed in the OR with the patient under general anesthesia for their safety.
Your surgeon will make a horizontal incision above the pubic area and another incision in the belly button for repositioning.
If you have abdominal muscle separation, your surgeon will use sutures to tighten the abdominal wall. After this step, they will remove excess skin and fat strategically to emphasize masculine contours. (2) Your surgeon will then create a new position for the navel so that the abdomen looks completely natural.
This surgery typically takes about two to four hours, depending on the extent of your corrections and whether other procedures will accompany your tummy tuck. (2)
Recovery
After your procedure, we will monitor you briefly before sending you home for your recovery. We will also provide further instructions for proper healing and prescribe medication to alleviate any discomfort.
During the first week, downtime will be necessary as the body heals. You may experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort. Sleeping in a reclined position can help reduce tension. Although it may feel slightly uncomfortable, walking in a slightly bent position can help promote healthy blood flow.
By the second and fourth weeks, you will be able to stand more upright, allowing you to return to light exercise and light desk work. However, you will still need to avoid heavy lifting and abdominal exercises. You may still experience swelling and bruising, but these symptoms will diminish significantly around this time.
By the fifth and sixth week, swelling and bruising should subside, and most patients will return to their normal activities—which include heavier lifting and intense exercise—with their surgeon’s approval.
After the sixth week and beyond in your healing journey, your incisions will continue to heal and fade in color. Your tummy tuck results will continue to improve after several months, and we will continue to monitor your progress at monthly follow-up visits.
Results
After your tummy tuck recovery, your abdomen will look slimmer and more defined while maintaining a masculine appearance. Your abdomen, which once had stubborn fat and loose skin, will now appear contoured, V-shaped, and slim with stronger, pronounced features. A tummy tuck will also enhance your core strength, posture, and muscle power. The final results will appear after three to six months, when the initial swelling, bruising, and discomfort subsides, offering a long-term solution.
We recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle and continuing to implement a targeted exercise regimen to optimize your results and their longevity.
Corresponding Procedures
A tummy tuck pairs effectively with other procedures to enhance results. Some of these include:
Liposuction
Liposuction is a highly popular procedure that selectively removes fat from the abdomen, thighs, arms, and more using gentle suction technology. This procedure removes fat permanently and provides long-lasting results that enhance body contour. Combining a tummy tuck with liposuction improves the sculpted appearance of your abdomen by removing excess fat and skin, all in one session.
Emsculpt Neo
Emsculpt NEO is an FDA-approved body-sculpting and toning treatment that combines High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology with radiofrequency waves. This sculpting procedure enhances the contour and firmness of your body. Alongside a tummy tuck, Emsculpt NEO helps to build muscle after repairing separation and removing excess skin.
